About Film Lamination


Place the fiber based pulp molded tablewares or industrial packaging products onto cavities of molds, select the appropriate film; the ceramic heating plates are heated to soften the film; the air pump generates the negative pressure, to form strong suction strength in the vaccuum chamber, the laminating film is pulled and adhered to the surface of the products.

By applying film lining to the plant-base packaging, we could save up to 80% plastic. 100% plastic free is not always possible, all we can do so far is to reduce fossil-base plastics and replaced them with materials that can be regrown and recycled, are degradable and compostable, which helps reduce the climate impact of packaging.

*PFAS-free barriers are available on the market, with performance (especially for hot food>70 degrees) far way from the traditional barrier.

Compared to conventional fossil-based plastic products, the combination of fiber-based packaging and plastic film lamination can greatly reduce the usage of plastic, up to 90%. e.g. Zihaigou (self-heat food), the original plastic bucket is 26.5 grams, and the film-laminated product: bagasse pulp 24.5 + film ~ 3 grams. Normally, the laminate is extremely thin. In most cases, depending on your recycling guidelines, the thin lamination allows the item to be able to be put in the mainstream recycling program.

Currently, fluorine-free oil repellent (No-PFAS) is available on the market, but its performance is worse than traditional oil repellent. The traditional oil repellent can withstand oil temperature of 100 degrees, and the new oil repellent can currently withstand <70 degrees for 0.5 hours

PLA film

PLA is made of natural material such as corn. It’s biodegradable and compostable, it also can be recycled in the natural environment and nontoxic. PLA lamination is overwhelmed by overseas customers. 

 

D&W's PLA film has an good performance in oil (thicker film) and excellent water resistance, and can be heated in microwave  (<1000W) and ovens at 120 degrees (different product designs have slightly different performances).

PBAT film

PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) is a fully biodegradable polymer. When buried in real soil environments, it breaks down completely and leaves no toxic residues behind. 

PBAT-based compostable bioplastics will decompose due to the action of naturally occurring microorganisms such as fungi, algae and bacteria. Whether home or commercially composted, the bioplastics will break down without creating methane or emitting any toxins harmful to our environment.

PBAT film can withstand  about 120 degrees (different product designs have slightly different performance).

Film color can be customized according to the color swatches.

CPET film

Crystallized polyethylene terephthalate (CPET) is a variation of standard PET which has been crystallized for heat resistance, rigidity, and toughness. Food-grade PET is safe for food contact. The migration and exudation of additives will not occur during use, and the material itself is safe. CPET film has excellent high and low temperature resistance, especially suitable for the environmental requirements of airline meals.

CPET film can withstand high temperature of 220 degrees (different product design, slightly different performance).

CPP film

PP, polypropylene film, (polypropylene) food grade. Non-toxic, compoundable, better transparency than PE, slightly worse hardness. The texture is soft, with the transparency of PP and the softness of PE.

PP film can withstand high temperature of 150-180 degrees (different product designs, different film thicknesses, and slightly different heat resistance performance).

EVOH High barrier film

In the food packaging industry, using a material composition that extends shelf life is a key component to ensuring the safety of the product and preserving the taste of the food. In addition, using packaging material that prolongs a products shelf life can drastically cut down on waste of perishable products, and creates a longer window for grocery stores to stock product before it reaches the hands of the consumer. A great way to achieve this is by using a packaging material that reduces the amount of oxygen that permeates the plastic, such as EVOH, incorporating the material into either a multi-layer coextruded rollstock structure, or an extrusion laminated structure.

EVOH stands for Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and is a flexible, crystal clear, glossy thermoplastic copolymer. This material has excellent flex-crack resistance, and exhibits a high resistance to hydrocarbons, oils and organic solvents. EVOH is known for having some of the best barrier resistance to gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide which makes it particularly suited for packaging food, drugs, cosmetics, and other perishable products. When compared to other common films, EVOH is considered to have superior barrier properties. However, when exposed to moisture, EVOH loses its good gas barrier properties. For this reason, EVOH is often used in a multilayer co-extruded film structure with materials such as HDPE, PP and PET, all of which have superior moisture barrier properties.

It can withstand high temperature of about 150-180 degrees.
