From Film Performance to Finished-Tray Performance

For food packaging, the barrier performance of a film does not necessarily represent the barrier performance of the finished package.

Once an EVOH or other high-barrier film is laminated onto a molded fiber tray, the final performance can be affected by the tray structure, film thickness distribution, lamination process, stretching and forming conditions.

So we wanted to answer a more practical question:

How much oxygen and water vapor can the finished laminated fiber tray actually resist?

DNW Packaging can now support finished-tray OTR and WVTR testing through one of our testing partners, Labthink.

🔬 What can be tested?

OTR — Oxygen Transmission Rate

Evaluates the rate at which oxygen permeates through the finished packaging structure.

WVTR — Water Vapor Transmission Rate

Evaluates the rate at which water vapor permeates through the finished packaging structure.

The test principle is straightforward:

Outside the package
→ Oxygen / water vapor environment

Inside the package
→ High-purity nitrogen flow

Oxygen and water vapor that permeate into the package are carried by the nitrogen stream to the corresponding sensor, where the transmission rate can be measured and calculated.

Labthink provides OTR and WVTR testing solutions for packaging materials and containers, including methods based on relevant ASTM and ISO standards.

📦 Current container size capability

The current test configuration is suitable for open-top containers with:

Top opening < 31 × 27 cm
Height < 15 cm

Why test the finished tray?

Because:

Film Data ≠ Finished Tray Data

A high-barrier EVOH film may demonstrate excellent oxygen barrier performance as a standalone material.

But after:

Film

↓

Lamination

↓

Forming / Stretching

↓

Molded Fiber Tray

↓

Finished Package

the final barrier performance is what really matters for the packaging application.

This is particularly relevant for:

MAP packaging
Fresh food
Ready-to-eat meals
Oxygen-sensitive foods
Moisture-sensitive products

Instead of looking only at the film specification, we want to understand the performance of the actual laminated package.

Building a more complete lamination development pathway

At DNW, we are gradually moving from:

“What can this film do?”

to:

“What can this film do after it becomes part of the finished fiber package?”

Our development pathway is:

Material → Lamination → Finished Tray → Barrier Testing

This helps us and our customers better evaluate high-barrier solutions for molded fiber packaging.

From film performance to finished-tray performance.

Because better sustainable packaging needs not only the right material — but also data from the finished package.
